Acclaimed actress Nandita Das steps behind the camera for the first time with FIRAAQ. Set one month after the 2002 communal riots in Gujarat, India where three thousand Muslims were killed, the film follows a day in the life of ordinary people, some who were victims, some who were perpetrators and some who chose to watch silently, as they deal with guilt, anger, fear, suspicion and loss of faith in the wake of horrific violence. The title FIRAAQ comes from an Urdu word meaning both separation and quest. It perfectly evokes the division between the two communities as well as the journey towards hope that each character undertakes.
As an actress, Das has never shied away from difficult subjects and her compassionate directorial debut is a logical extension of those daring roles. FIRAAQ adds to her already impressive body of work that brings important social subjects to light.
